Heritage Days - Guided Tour of the Church in Zetting

Just 7 km from Sarreguemines, nestled in a bend of the Saar River on a lush green hill, discover the architectural treasures of the Saint-Marcel Church in Zetting. At first glance, the architecture is striking. The round bell tower from the 11th century reflects the building’s Romanesque origins. The Romanesque-style nave, likely dating from the 11th and 12th centuries, served as the original place of worship. After constructing the choir in 1434 in a pure Gothic style, the Benedictines of Tholey Abbey remodeled the nave between 1480 and 1490, bringing it up to date. A unique 14th-century Deposition of Christ features figures brought by the monks of Tholey, who administered the church. Restoration work has also revealed delicate and ornate Renaissance frescoes. The stained-glass windows, painted by various schools between the construction of the choir and the renovations of the nave, constitute the masterpiece of the church in Zetting. The choir of Saint-Marcel Church still preserves a set of stained-glass windows created in the second quarter of the 15th century by a Rhineland workshop.
